THE BOY STOOD ON THE BURNING DECK.... WHAT FOR?

“Suddenly the Ship was on high flames…. The Captain was busy in fighting out the fire and Rescuing his trapped passengers…. As his young son too was travelling with him, the Captain quickly positioned his boy on the high point of the Deck and said, “Don’t move from here till I come back!” Soon the entire ship caught fire and the brave Captain died in flames while rescuing his passengers…. The fire finally came on to the deck and the few survivors around asked the boy to step down from there to save himself and they were ready to help him out…. The boy said, 'My father asked me to stay here till he comes back…. I will wait till he tells me to come down!' When others said that his father died in the fire, the boy said with all firmness, 'I can't move unless he asks me to do that!' and the fire soon engulfed him!" said a father narrating the age old famous story to his 14 yr old son and waited for a while to notice his reaction....

The son just said, “Dad! it appears to me meaningless the way the boy had behaved by not moving from the Deck… He could have first saved his life which is really precious…. What is the point here in sticking to the statement, 'My father should come and tell me and then only I will come down?'”

The father was silent instantly; in sometime, the son left for his activities….

The father, subsequently discussed the same matter with an elderly Well-wisher and said, “I feel sad for the younger generation of today not able to uphold Morals and Ethics of life!"

The Well-wisher, a man of deep wisdom looked at him, smiled and said, “Dear! You are mistaken.... The youngsters of today’s life are more interested in questioning thoroughly everything and then only accept what is said or what they are asked to do…. This attitude is in fact the right way for betterment in life rather than accepting what is told through an indirect authority of Cultural and Moral Values which have their own shortcomings too….” he paused for a while and continued….

“No doubt, the Story of our times is the Number One in preaching the duties of a son towards a parent and the Story upholds the same Values even today, but tell me one thing.... We of Older Generation never questioned here even a bit but accepted the whole as is because that was considered a sin but still as you can imagine equal number of our time parents too had their problems with their children sometimes serious ones too at the back of even being taught such morals in the younger days…. Meaning, the percolation of this Great Message into our own doings in the right direction was not that much and in some cases was not there at all so to say….

In contrast, today's younger generation is squarely questioning here, assessing the right and the wrong, redefining the same where required and thus are living their lives….
Of course, the surrounding glitter and glamour forever keeps them distracted and misguides them from doing the right which used to happen in our times too in a different way.... So let us say only that point here that every one should forever guard themselves from the ill effects of this glitter and glamour around beyond a limit but nothing more in the form of imposed morals....

That way seen as the right attitude, don't you agree that the modern youth are sure expressing themselves better in this process of questioning which is sure the gist of one's life at any point of time?”

  4. Nicely penned... I too feel that questioning for understanding is better than following blindly but .. if situation demand (on rare occasions) I feel Id follow my parents even if I disagree after letting them know about my viewpoint.

    1. I understand here the limitation and an all lovable experienced Parent by side truly supports there..... In normal Circumstances, where the dangers foreseen are almost nil or minor in expansion, it's wisdom every one explores there freely.... Thanks for a good observation on the limit of action here in this Scenario!

  5. what a meaningful post! Sometimes the older generation simply misunderstand the intent of the younger one. I have always believed that there is always something to learn from everyone including the young people esp. children, toddlers and infants :)
