Whenever I am doing a job, there are two aspects related to it..

No 1 is.. I have to do it to make a living..

No 2 is..  I am doing it because I love to do it..

If No 2 is the reason with No 1 or without No 1, what I am doing is always the right. But if 1st one alone is the reason, I need to constantly put 2 questions to me.. 

1)  Am I earning enough to make both the ends meet and

He was the

• Demanding, 
• Asserting and 
• Never yielding 

Person at his work all along implementing strict discipline thru' an iron hand over years.

For such a person too the D-Day had arrived and he had to retire. People who worked with him gave lengthy speeches bringing out their earlier memories of interactions and wished him a happy retired life..

Finally the gentleman had to speak..

He became emotional but controlled himself and putting up a brave smile at length, spoke about his friends, memories, personal interactions, work related issues and further continued..

“No doubt, from tomorrow I may not have busy schedules of this Office but as I look at myself, suddenly I find many works around me..

• I should now register and get my Senior Citizen ID Card.. 
• I've to make good plans to invest all of my savings.. 
• I should streamline my pension payment issues.. 
• I should re-register with our Company for the new Medical benefits.. and 
• I got to finish few of my personal works pending for quite some time.. 

Sure, no breathing time from tomorrow and don’t know how to handle all these all of sudden!” 

The listeners maintained pin drop silence as the person spoke and ended his talk knowing within that those own works would be nothing compared to his active work life..

The Function over, in the next one hr he was put in the company car and was bid a permanent 'BYE!' 

Next to all that noise, further there was simply silence and only silence for a while as the car moved on smoothly with the driver silently doing his job..

After a travel of half hr, the car suddenly got into a heavy traffic jam. All the vehicles came to a halt and there appeared no moving forward at all for a while..

As the man looked out thru' his window, on to the pavement, he saw a mother consoling her crying child and another lady asking her the reason for the child's crying. The mother was heard saying..

“This boy had school till last week. Now holidays are declared and I planned for him.... but he doesn't want to go there. No prob, he'll be alright soon. You see..

Not having active engagement is sure a big problem with any one!"

The words straight hit the person as his heart sank for a moment. Keeping a deaf ear to the talk, as he turned his attention to the other side of the road in between the stationary vehicles, he saw on the pavement

A rag picker having collected few bits of items and papers from a bin further

Having no work to do, silently sat in a corner gazing at the sky with a blank expression clearly noticed on his face..

There was a message..

The young man who newly joined the Company in short time, understood that 

'The Customer is the most important person in work environment!'

In 3 yrs time, he was made the Group In-Charge and the impositions of the Client soon made him firm up in his mind..

'The Customer in work environment is vested with an unknown authority!'

In the next 4 yrs, he took over as Manager and had to face some tense moments in his new Role with the Customer which made him re-define his earlier Concept of Customer,

'The Customer in work environment at times, is like a Royal Personality!'

More years passed.. The then man of 40s changed his Company and took up the Senior Executive Role in the new Company operating in a much fierce competitive environment..

He had some sleepless nights over the never ending Customer's questioning and the Boss commenting on his new Role which made him to talk around..

'The Customer in work environment needs to be treated sometimes more than a Royal personality!'

In 8 years of time, he was promoted to the Post of GM and in next 3 years, CEO of the Company..

Before discussing the welfare measures of an employee at work, the measures available at work for redressal of grievance or problem on either side of employee and employer have to be understood clearly.

Striking Work is the right available to the employees under collective bargaining to stop or abstain from work till such time the right of employee with respect to employment is addressed to the justified level as per labor laws of the state.

The employer should agree to the demand of employees if the strike is established as legal and the employer has to pay back the wages of employees for the period of strike. In case the strike is established as illegal, the employees may lose wages for the strike period with a penalty.

Lockout is a measure adapted by the employer to temporarily lock the gates of the company from employees entering the premises when it can be reasonably established that there is a danger to the property/business if the employees are allowed in the premises and lift the same the earliest the danger/damage signs vanish. During the period of lockout the employee receives no wages.

Layoff is a measure adapted by the employer to cater for lesser demand in the market for services/skills of employees temporarily and is resorted to such a time the demand reestablishes in the market.

During layoff, the employer should constantly be considering how to redeploy the employees and pay them the minimum wages as stipulated by law for survival of employee at a dignified level. The employees should wait patiently for the change without resorting to any unlawful activities or may quit the employment as per the rules laid down.

Employee welfare measures are such steps taken by the employer ensuring welfare of employee in a reasonable way without disrupting active, profitable and productive work.

Welfare at work is a concept in which the employee does his/her work with devotion and the employer takes care of some of the specific measures related to the employee where in if not done, the employee’s health and well being and hence his/her rightful living are affected and the work output in turn suffers.

Welfare measures are defined many times in various measures depending on the ruling authorities. It is difficult to define welfare measures at one stretch.

The capitalistic economies define welfare in one way and the socialist economies define different from this. Economies of socialist groups have broken down where the implementation of welfare measures could not be checked or allowed to exist beyond the means. Economies of capitalistic groups have prospered but only at the exploitation of the weak..

Welfare is a measure to be remembered by both employer and employee the right way. It helps the business to grow and both employer and employee are happy and become prosperous. If misused, both the parties would get affected and in general the economy of the state will be under threat..

The Employer has primarily invested his/her wealth in the business for earning a decent profit after meeting the cost towards employee welfare and grow the same. He/she always wishes to withdraw his/her investment if his/her business is not profitable and if the law of land does not permit that, first of all he/she will not invest. The employee should ever remember this at work and never demand beyond what can reasonably be afforded..

A man of mid thirties had worked hard in his own small business he started at a young age after graduation and brought it to a success. He used to pay utmost attention to his Customers and it became a habit with him.. 

Day and night, holiday or a working day and ultimately himself well or not well the man used to take certain attention, sincerely answer the Customer, see that his / her immediate need was taken care. This attitude in him continued without a stop and his business flourished without a let down..

“I am ready to serve my Customer at an extra cost. If required, I don’t mind spending more than what I receive in the process but want to regain the his / her satisfaction and you know one satisfied Customer brings you ten future Customers!”

Thus he used to say.. 

His devotion to Customer was so unique and unmatched that the other Contenders in the field were automatically kept off without a say..

Such a personality too slowly started thinking different. It happens.. 

It is said that we are different roughly at every five year stages of life. Thus, the man of mid thirties as he entered forties, was a dissatisfied man who felt that his ambition in life was different and some how he got into this unending working.. 

Soon it gained momentum, he could no more control himself and on one of the days met an elderly well-wisher who was known for his wisdom and sincerely sought his advice on winding up the business, 

“I want to do some thing extra ordinary in life and that way monies are never a problem with me. I feel that I got into a wrong line of this business!”

Said the man....

The elderly looked at him, smiled and said, 

“My dear! As I know, you are doing an honest business and you are not after money. Had these not been the reasons with you, I would have straight away told you to pursue what you liked to do. But you know..” 

The elderly paused a while and continued, 

“You have built an Empire in time through your dedication, hard work and with a ‘Never mind attitude.’ The outcome of these three entities is always sacred and that has to be respected for ever.. 

If you get away from this Empire, soon unscrupulous and money minded people surely occupy the field and instead of devotion and dedication, greed and looting would prevail everywhere which bring in untold miseries and unhappiness all around.. 

And the Customers here thus suffer and of course at large, the people too!”

“Let me tell you.. Your dissatisfaction should never bring down this Empire! Let your Customers alone say that they would be happy if you do this.. 

Till that time what has gained momentum should continue and that way alone you are doing the best in/for your life!”

Concluded the gentleman..

"What all you said.. I agree to and you should give best incentives known to you within your limits to retain the man with you at all costs. But..."

Replied the man of wisdom..

"What else, Sir?"

I queried..

"Dear! If 'X', working with me goes away, I'll get 'Y' in that place!"

Said the wise man..

"But the new person sure will not be the same level!"

I expressed my doubt..

"No doubt, dear.. Chance wise,

"A small percentage only.. You'll get similar or better person,

On an average, you'll get an approximate suitable person and you train the person to the requirement,

Maximum percent, you'll get a person just like that and you train him the best!"

Replied the man of wisdom..

"But still it'll not 100% of today?"

I shot back..

"You'll make it almost of today by yourself doing remaining petty works!"

Said the wise man looking into my eyes..

No doubt, the strain behind my doing at times make me callous for a moment but that single moment is enough to put off our prestigious Customers and they may take a look at our Competitor..

That single look sure brings rising dark clouds on our activities and if they change their minds, in no time those

• Dark clouds turn to menacingly darker resulting in
• Blinding lightenings and 
• Deafening thunders leading to 
• Untimely heavy down pours flooding us washing away our so many years of hard work.. 

Instead, let me be ever alert to see our efforts and sincerity constantly bring us

The farmer in the forefront was saying smiling..

• "Our Community worked hard and produced food for your sustenance.. 

What have you given us in return as true economic exchange?"

The suppliers of food and water were next seen waiting in the queue saying..

• "We worked hard and brought drinking water and food to your home.. 

What have you given us in return as true economic exchange?"

The Producers and Suppliers of other essentials were seen beyond in the same queue saying..

• "We worked hard and helped you make your day.. 

What have you given us in return as true economic exchange?"

Subsequent to that, the people behind production and supply of other day to day supplies too were seen in the queue saying..

• "We worked at the back and helped you make have a smooth day with the supply of your tooth brush, tooth paste, bath soap, towel, fuel in the kitchen, kitchen utensils, tableware, morning news paper, your vehicle etc etc and what not? 

What have you given us in return as true economic exchange?"

"Oh.. God.. Seen thus, the list of people coming up seems endless whose services together alone made what I call today my smooth and hassle free life!"

As I was taken over thus by my thoughts on how I should do my work perfectly so that I return to these communities the true economic exchange for my consumption, the words of our 

Father of Nation 

Started ringing in my ears..

'If everyone thinks about the work one is doing and so works intelligently, one would

get the best education,

find the work interesting,

develop own intellect,

enlarge and purify one's heart,

acquire efficiency in the work and

make inventions and improvements

which would benefit the world..

As the work has become more interesting,

it gives joy and

makes the person feel no fatigue in doing it and

thus the work becomes artistic!'

IT'S NOTHING BUT FINDING 'IKIGAI' OF MY ACTIVE WORK LIFE!

• It's a chaotic situation when the tough Customer with me talks on issues where my Company/myself are unable to rescue him/her from the trouble he/she got into by believing all those seemingly feasible promises made from our end and 

I should have certain distant vision ever readying myself to address as many issues of my Client as possible without a single word of argument from my end!

• A tough Customer has no language barrier and freely conveys his/her point without a second thought and 

I should necessarily prepare myself well in advance without fail, as I'll understand every word of that conveyed in substance!

• My Boss at times would surely escape from tough Customer making me a scapegoat in the melee with a whisper and 

I should ever guard myself to minimize the impact of such a happening if can't be avoided in total!

• A tough Customer makes the serene environment around lost in no time making mental-peace of mine and my peers go expecting ‘Moon’ from sky and 

I should gracefully manage the situation and bring my Client to a level of accepting what is feasible and it's definetely a special art with me!

• A tough Customer is a symbolic representation of facing the knife edge competition in my business field and 

I should never fail to alert my confidence to check itself again and again before asserting firmly on the related issues!

• A tough Customer always assumes that there is no personality with me and 

I should be willing to cast off part of my ego in the process and put up a smile!

• My customer's memory is no less and makes me to be in the middle of a war when he/she arrives and 

I should fight that war heroically, create stable environment and win over my Client's confidence!

• A tough Customer is like a gold mine with me and 

I should invariably go through all that strenuous process of digging and segregating to pick up my gold of turning the tough Client to a potential future Customer!

• A tough Customer forever is at the threshold of my happiness stopping me experience that and 

I should never let my passion come down and continuously delight my Client in the process as then alone I'll have the so called life of mine!

• In spite of being well disciplined too, by chance I lose a tough Customer 

I should ever remember that part of my personality is temporarily lost and it takes great effort from my end to build it back with substance never allowing haunted feelings takeover me!

IT'S WORK!!!!

At work, there are 'Three Changes' that constantly do take place 'In and Around' an individual..

No 1 : The individual is constantly getting trained in his/her job and becoming more skillful without an exception as involving oneself in is an invariable learning..

No 2 : He/she is constantly working in an environment where the demand for and supply of' his/her skills are constantly changing..

No 3 : He/she is continuously aging and the related health issues both at the physical and mental level do influence his/her work capacities with more mental maturity at the back..

It is wisdom that one makes a note of the above and take appropriate actions in the right time on his/her behalf to meet these challenges of work life.. 

These specifically include..

No 1 : Taking up higher and related responsibilities through promotions and job changes in the same field..

No 2 : Expanding into the related fields of immediate greater demand through additional Qualifications and extra Trainings..

No 3 : Taking care of health and practicing safety coupled with rule bound attitude thus protecting one's own earning capacities..

This 'Additional Discipline' coupled with 'Diligent Working' is the true 'Safe Guard' of one's work life!

NO DOUBT, WORK IS 100% WORSHIP!

From my bed, I thought lazily, "I'm off from work for the day!" 

Instantly, a few Proverbs/Quotes touched my ears..

• 'No bees, no honey; no work, no money!' - Proverb
• 'The lazy bones should work twice!' - South American Proverb
• 'A man grows most tired while standing still!' - Chinese Proverb
• 'Mankind's worst enemy is fear of work!'-- Unknown
• 'When I had money, every one called me brother!'-- Polish Proverb

Taken a back, I pulled up and declared, "OK.. Ready for 8 hrs!"

Again few Proverbs/Quotes poured in..

• 'I have 2 Masters, Devil and God. I work for Devil until lunch and follow the Lord!' -- Gypsy Proverb
• 'You will never plough a field if you only turn it over in your mind!' -- Irish proverb
• 'When I was a young man I observed that nine out of ten things I did were failures. I didn't want to be a failure, so I did ten times more work!' -- G B Shaw
• 'It's quite possible to work without results but never will there be results without work!' -- Unknown

Not able to get off from those Messages, I firmed up. "OK.. OK.. Promise more than 8 hrs!" 

Instantly I heard..

That message went deep into my heart and I modified my say, "Promise quality work more than 8 hrs a day!" 

In no time, one more quote was heard..

• 'Try not to become a person of success but try to become a person of value!' -- Albert Einstein

Shaken up again, I instantly changed it. "Let me do that quality work in shorter time!" 

The Great Entrepreneur was smiling at me saying,

• 'It's not the Employer who pays the wages. Employers handle the money. It's the customer who pays the wages!' -- Henry Ford

Felt bad having ignored the fact therein and I corrected myself. "Let me do the highest quality work and wait till my customer accepts it!" 

I was gently reminded at that point of time thru' the famous quote..

• 'Know what you own and know why you own it!' -- Peter Lynch

I got it and corrected fully myself with my decision. "Let me do all that work sincerely and impress my customer to get future orders for my company!" 

Still, I was not freed and another gentle reminder followed..

• 'Money grows on trees of persistence!' -- Japanese Proverb

"Thanks for the great Sayings.. Finally I understood what a sincere work is and I'll do my work to get future orders keeping off rivals from my customer!"

Great Personalities never left me there and thru' their Sayings showed where I can improve!

• 'Chose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life!' -- Confucius
• 'Pleasure in job puts perfection in work!' -- Aristotle
• 'May the work of your hands be the gratitude and reverence to the human condition!' -- MK Gandhi

Finally, as I bowed down to Great Personalities for awakening me and putting me into the best mode of working with total dedication, right at that moment Sloka 10, Chapter III, Bhagavad Gita was heard on distant loud speakers with the meaning explained..
